A Work in Progress by Anne Ruby

Part Two: Lauren's Story

“And she tried to fancy what the flame of a candle is like after the candle is blown out, for she could not remember ever having seen such a thing.” — Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland

Children of the Sea

September 8, 2001 starts out in an unusual manner for nine-year old Lauren, and the day gets even more bizarre after she discovers a charming British Intelligence Officer, Mr. Egerton Sykes, in her father’s office conversing with the priceless artifact she thought they’d lost earlier that morning -- the spooky but intriguing Crystal Skull.

The story of how her father met Mr. Sykes is weird enough, but the bold Englishman has lots more to tell Lauren and her cousins, and his methods are anything but conventional. Why has her father never mentioned this lively foreigner to her before, and who is the gifted trance-channeler, Mr. Bloomfield, that Mr. Sykes keeps raving about?

The costumes at the Pet Stop Carnival and Costume Shop are more than Lauren bargained for, and at Dolphin Ridge, her first impatient attempt to pass through Poseidon’s Door ends in pure disaster. Not sure if she’s the butt of a bad joke or the victim of a virtual reality game gone haywire, stubborn and independent Lauren has words with King Chronos that send her to the dungeons in the Shadowland -- and her most challenging adventure of all.

What is the secret of the owl-headed vase?

What keys to the unraveling mystery of the whereabouts of Atlantis does Lauren find in the Library of Alexandria?

And what does Poseidon, the God of the Sea, reveal to Lauren in the ever-changing Temple of Translucent Walls?

Read it all for yourself in Lauren's story and then venture into new territory with Jared's Story.
